HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL DIRECTION Alf Otto Hellkvist,
Application April 5,

In Sweden September 30, 1942 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a frictional hinge for windows or the like pivotal in horizontal or vertical direction, especially for so-called perspective windows or the like, which hinge may be adapted to the size and weight of the window in such a manner that the frictional parts of the hinge are not exposed to excessive load.
According to the invention the hinge shank which is fixed to the window casement is pivotally journalled in the hinge shank which is fixed to the window frame, and is provided with a, pinshaped extension, on which areplaced the necessary number of interchangeable frictional disks which are pressed a spiral spring, said disks being alternately piv- .oted and fixed respectively on the pin-shaped extension. I a
The disks which are pivotally mounted on the pin-shaped extension may, according to this invention, be connected with the hinge shank fixed to the window frame by providing them with holes which are engaged by a 'pin secured to said against each other by means of;
hinge shank and common for all of these disks. I
The other disks, which are fixed to the pin-shaped extension, may be provided with parts projecting into their central openings, which projections engage longitudinal grooves provided in the pinshaped extension.
According to the invention, the'pin-shaped extension may consist of a member fixed to the hinge shank of the window casement by means of screws and a projecting part engaging a groove or the like in said hinge shank.
Two embodiments cording to the invention are illustrated on the accompanying drawings.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the .front and side view, respectively, of a window pivotable in the horizontal direction and provided with two frictional hinges according to the invention.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the frictional hinge according to Figs. 1 and 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section along the line IV-IV in Fig. 3.
Figs. ,5 and 6 show the pin-shaped extension in detail plan and side views, while of the frictional hinge ac- Figs. 7 and 8 show bothkinds of disks in side view.
Fig. 9 is a side view of a modified embodiment of the frictional hinge.
I is the window casement, which is pivotally journalled about the axis 22 in the Window frame 3 by means of two frictional hinges.
One shank 5 of the frictional hinge is fixed to the easement I by means of screws or the like,
screws 6 and a projecting part or rib 8 engaginga groove I in the shank 4 a pin 9 is fixed to the shank 5. The pin 9 is provided with a flange I0 forming a spacer piece or member between the shanks 4, 5 and having a hub portion I I, by means of which the shank 5 is pivotally journalled on the shank 4.
The disk I2 shown in Fig. 7 being non-rotatable in relation to the shank 4 and having a central opening I4 is provided with a hole I3 which is engaged by a pin I5 secured to the shank 4 when the disk is pushed on to the pin 9. The other disk I6 shown in Fig. 8 being non-rotatable in relation to the pin is pushed on to the pin 9 by means of the central opening I1 in such a manner that projections l8 in the opening engage longitudinal grooves I9 in the pin.
The disks I2 and I6 which are alternately pushed on to the pin 9 are pressed together by means of a spiral spring 2|, one end of which abuts against the disks and the other end against a washer 20, the spring 2| being tensioned by means of a screw 22 screwed into the pin 9.
The number of the disks to the sizeand weight of the window.
Thescrew 22, a screwed-on nut or the like may be used for the adjustment of the tension of the spring 2|, as shown in Figure 4.
According to Fig. 9 it is also possible to tension the spring 2| by means of a Washer 23, which is pushed on to the pin 9 and the extended pin I5 and is held in position by meansof split pins 24.
Having now particularly described the nature of my invention and the manner of its operation what I claim is:
1. A hinge for pivoting a closure toa closure frame and for frictionally holding them in relative adjusted position which comprises, a first hinge shank adapted to be fixed to a closure, a second hinge shank adapted to be fixed to a axial movement, a first group of said disks being keyed against rotation with respect tosaid keyway, a disk intermediate each pair o1 disks of the I2 and I6 is adapted key-way, a plurality of friction disks mounted on said keyway for free 2 i V n i 2,376,965
first group mounted for free axial movement and rotation on said key-way and engaged bysaid pinj so that the disks of the first group are held against rotation relative to the key-way and the;
other disks are' rotatably mounted with respect to the key-way but held against rotation relative to the second hinge shankby said pin, and a spring on said key-way acting to compress all of 5 said disks axiallyand to hold-said second hinge 10 in said hinge shank.
spring is helical and is disposed about the free end of said key-way, and wherein the end of the spring remote from the end acting on the disks abuts against a washer fixed to said key-way.
3. A hinge according to claim 1 in which the .means defining in coaxial succession thespacer member, the hub and the key-way is secured to said first hinge. shank by means of screws, and
is provided with a rib cooperating with a groove ALF OTTO HELLKVIST.
