Abstract

A method of aligning a magnetic read/write head (22) to data tracks (12) on a magnetic surface of a digital linear tape (12). The method includes writing a signal over a track (12) of optical servo marks located on the magnetic surface of the tape (12) with a servo channel writer (82), generating a position error signal from read back signals obtained from a servo channel reader (82), and positioning the magnetic read/write head (22) in accordance with the position error signal.
