Donna Bartos Founder & CEO, Purple Ribbon Council

LEARN FROM THE BEST! Join a group of leading women to connect, learn and grow. Inspire is a monthly opportunity to build your network of professional women. Learn, up close and personal, from the best and brightest women in the Valley. Speakers share their personal journey of success and key lessons they’ve learned along the way.

From the age of five, Donna’s altruistic spirit was evident. Her parents operated a no-kill animal shelter where she learned to rescue, nurture and find forever homes for abandoned animals. Her childhood years filled with community service, a liberal arts degree in communication and political science, and almost 15 years experience fundraising and marketing in the non-profit sector were all instrumental in preparing Donna for her work today. But, it is a past personal experience with teen dating abuse that drives Donna’s passion and determination to stop domestic abuse through the Purple Ribbon Council programs such as GO PURPLE, the Purple Ribbon Fund for Children, Rock the Purple and “It’s Okay to Talk About It” Community Dialogue Circles.

pW / Fortune / BUSINESS

Turn Passion into Profit Millions of women have done it and millions more want it… to be their own boss. But the road to self employment can seem overwhelming or simply impossible. That’s why Phoenix Woman set out to seek the help and guidance from the best of the best—Tamara Monosoff. If you’re skeptical or have never heard of her, allow us to enlighten you of her incredible background. Monosoff is the founder of a company called Mom Inventors, which provides information, interaction and education to women entrepreneurs. She is the best selling author of “The Mom Inventors Handbook: How to Turn Your Great Ideas into the Next Big Thing” and has just recently released a new book called “Your Million Dollar Dream.” Monosoff has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, the New Yorker, Time, People and US News and World Report. She has appeared on “Oprah,” “The View,” the “Today Show,” “Nightly News,” “Good Morning America Weekend,” “The Bloomberg Report,” “Business Week TV” and “CNN News.” It seems everybody is clambering to get a piece of her and her advice. Impressed yet? Having served as senior communications associate for the Clinton Administration, education director for the president’s commission on White House Fellowship and chief of staff for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education, Monosoff comes equipped with a background that is unparalleled and proven exceptional for motivating people and helping launch dreams. We were thrilled when her media coordinator, who has experienced the book and has spoken to Monosoff on our behalf, was willing to offer her wisdom to us and our readers.

LIVE “YOUR MILLION DOLLAR DREAM…” …AND BECOME “THE BOSS” by Marybeth Grass Have you dreamt of becoming your own boss? You’re not alone. Millions of women are living the dream. In fact 9.1 million businesses are owned by women—that’s 48 percent of all businesses in the United States, according to The National Foundation for Women Business Owners. As for the millions of others who want to take the entrepreneurial plunge but don’t know how to get started, Monosoff can help.

phoenixWoman.com

(left) Tamara Monosoff, author of “Your Million Dollar Dream.”

Her new book, “Your Million Dollar Dream” provides a clear road map to get you where you want to go, no matter what your specific goals or desires. From linking your dream to practical business possibilities to creating a compelling and effective business plan, Monosoff provides clear step-by-step guidance and resources needed to start immediately, including stories of others who have created rewarding businesses and made significant lifestyle changes. Just as important, the book focuses on choosing or creating work that is satisfying and supports what you want to achieve in your life. Monosoff believes success will look different for every person. You might want to make millions by building a business you can pass on for generations. Someone else may want to create a business that brings in the same income they’re making now, while another person may simply want side work that’ll earn an extra $20,000 per year doing something they love. There are countless variations, but Monosoff says all of them will lead to one result—making money. And, that alone, is worth pursuing. “Your ‘someday life’ is available to you right now,” Monosoff says. “I have put my heart, experience and knowledge into creating this book. It contains valuable insider tools you can use to earn an income your way.”

8 TIPS FROM “YOUR MILLION DOLLAR DREAM” GET STARTED FOLLOWING YOUR PASSION AND MAKING MONEY: 1. TAKE A STAND FOR YOURSELF. If you are dissatisfied with your current circumstances no one will fix them—except for you. It doesn’t do any good to blame the economy, your boss, spouse or family. Change can only occur when you make a conscious decision to make it happen. 2. TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF YOURSELF. If you know you want to do something new, but don’t yet know the “what” or “how,” don’t expect that you should know what that “thing” is or the steps for getting there. 3. FIGURE OUT THE RIGHT BUSINESS FOR YOU. What do you already know? What are you passionate about? What are concrete business opportunities for you to consider? Give yourself permission to explore. 4. ADOPT A SERVICE MINDSET. Regardless of the type of business you choose, you need to be committed to serving others—customers, clients, employees, community and investors.

Insurance Do’s and Don’ts Are you Prepared for the Future? by Tisha Diffie

Before you turn the page and skip this article entirely, take a minute to read on. Insurance is one of those things we all must have, even though most of us dread talking about it, thinking about it or much less buying it. But the information you’ll read here will be well worth your time. While some insurance is required by law, other insurance is optional—but a good idea, I might add. As a local estate planner, I can tell you there are several things that are constant when you are looking to purchase insurance. The following tips are suggestions I offer my clients to help guide them through some of the most important planning decisions they’ll ever make.

6 TIPS TO PURCHASING THE RIGHT COVERAGE: 1. Always get more than one quote. Three are good, but five is best. It does take time, but in the long run you will get a much better price for the type of policy you need. 2. Use an independent agent/broker. These professionals will shop different companies and can provide you with the product that best fits your needs. Even though the industry is regulated, there are price variances that are worth taking a look at. 3. Don’t sign the first time around. If the agent is pressuring you to buy right then, don’t. They could be attempting to make a quota. Or, they could be trying to sell you something you may not really need. What most people may not realize is that agents live on commission—if you feel a sense of urgency on their part, that’s where it’s coming from. 4. Ask questions. And then ask more questions. Don’t ever buy something you don’t fully understand and that doesn’t exactly solve a need you have. Like most everything in life, the add-ons are usually not necessary—just an extra expense. 5. Don’t be afraid to say “no” or “not right now.” If you have the luxury of taking your time, do it. There are occasions when an urgent need has to be met, but sleeping on the decision is a wise choice. 6. Ask the agent what they are going to make. It may be a tough question to ask, but there isn’t any reason why you shouldn’t. If you have been

16

phoenixWoman.com

presented with more than one option, the agent will often talk you into the one that pays a higher commission. While you do want the agent to make a fair profit for their time and effort, there is no reason to over pay. Insurance can be a complicated process, especially when you get into business coverage, estate planning or life settlements. However, if you take the time to ask questions and understand what you are buying, it can give you a great deal of comfort knowing you have purchased something that is necessary and can benefit your family. For more information, call your local agent and schedule a review meeting. They can evaluate your needs and give you the best guidance on what insurance is best for you. pW

dr.anna solley Chief officer of Phoenix College

Building Tomorrow’s Leaders Meet Dr. Anna Solley. For 33 years Dr. Solley, chief officer of Phoenix College, has maintained one passion and promoted one message: the importance of education, not only to better yourself and your life but also to improve your community. Born and raised in the border town of Nogales, Dr. Solley says her family was not college educated and had few resources. But, it was her parents who encouraged her to follow the path of higher learning. “The message in my family was ‘Querer es poder’ [Where there’s a will, there’s a way],” Solley says. Attaining education was Solley’s driving force. She graduated from ASU, simultaneously earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree then later, a doctorate in higher adult education. Her long list of titles includes dean of instruction, vice chancellor and now, for the past five years, president of Phoenix College. Solley is also an active board member of Arizona Women's Education and Employment, serves as a mentor in the Women’s Leadership Group and was pivotal in bringing the first “Arizona Latina Trailblazers” event to the college as a celebration of dynamic Hispanic women of our past and present. “Being Latina and being a woman reinforces the commitment I have to ensure other ethnic minorities who are women have opportunities just like I had,” she says. “It also makes me work harder to be sure I am fair and equitable and that I give everyone an equal opportunity for education.”

nona lee Arizona Diamondbacks senior vice president and general counsel

Power Through Sports Meet Nona Lee. You may never know it upon first glance, but Lee, one of the most inconspicuous and humble people you will ever meet, is actually one of the biggest “power players” our state has ever seen; she holds her own with the guys, on or off the field, and occupies one of the highest ranking positions at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lee is a former swimmer, water polo player and Pepperdine University basketball player. Her love of sports and enthusiasm for team spirit is what carried her through some hard-learned life lessons—vowing early on, to help make sports available to children of all economic backgrounds. “Help girls and women find their power through sports,” is the motto of the non-profit organization Lee founded in August of 2001. The Phoenix Women’s Sports Association (PWSA) is designed to raise awareness of the importance of sports at the grass roots level for girls and women. “You should always give back more than you take,” says Lee. Lee’s impressive background includes graduating summa cum laude from the Oklahoma City University School of Law. She became a litigation associate for the first four years of her practice but quickly found her way back into the sports arena as associate general counsel. She then became the vice president and associate general counsel for the Phoenix Suns, Diamondbacks, Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Rattlers, Chase Field, US Airways Center and the Dodge Theater. Lee is now exclusive to the D-backs and has been with the team for the past six seasons, where she oversees all legal issues for the organization. “While I am out there working to reach my goals professionally, I think…what I can do along the way to help others…and inspire others to do the same.” 18

rhonda forsyth President and CEO of John C. Lincoln Health Network

Making a Difference In the Lives of People Meet Rhonda Forsyth—a Valley business leader and health care administrator for more than 20 years. Newly named president and chief executive officer of John C. Lincoln Health Network in April 2009, Forsyth has always had high hopes for herself and her community. “I never expected to become the president and CEO of anything, but during the course of my career I saw what a tremendous difference leadership makes, says Forsyth. “At the end of the day, I know my work makes a difference in the lives of people.” With a masters degree in business administration from ASU and a bachelors from Pitzer College, Forsyth joined John C. Lincoln 23 years ago and has been instrumental in leading the hospital through big changes—construction of a new emergency and level one trauma center, the expansion of new operating rooms and the addition of a new breast health center, having undergone treatment for breast cancer herself. “I wouldn’t change what happened to me,” says Forsyth, referring to the cancer diagnosis. “It made me a better administrator and more empathetic. You don’t have a true sense of that challenge, that complete sense of vulnerability, until you experience it.” Driven by her compassion for people and as a key player on John C. Lincoln’s management team, Forsyth has devoted her career to improving the quality of health care, human services and business practices provided by the hospital and its community programs. Looking forward, Forsyth is excited about the future. With her son heading to college; her focus for John C. Lincoln will be the continued mission of sustainability for the next 80 years. “I work with incredibly talented, smart and dedicated people…we are a culture of many experts; we bring that together to create a great place and meaningful place to work.”

catherine anaya Emmy Award-Winning Journalist

Fit For the Bold and Courageous Meet Catherine Anaya. This talented and versatile journalist in both broadcast and print has served as a special correspondent for Latino Perspectives magazine and the TV show, “Extra,” but Catherine Anaya is probably better known as the lead anchor for KPHO CBS 5. “Serving as one of the few Latina anchors in the market is something I consider a blessing and an honor, and one I take seriously,” says Anaya. “I have a personal responsibility to set high standards for myself, make my community proud and continue to give back, so young people can turn on the television, and know without a doubt, that anything is possible.” This three-time Emmy Award-winning journalist joined the local CBS 5 family seven years ago. Her television news experience is impressive and vast, including co-hosting a women’s talk show in Los Angeles and earning an Emmy nomination for news reports in El Salvador. One of her most notable and memorable accomplishments includes co-anchoring a 2004 presidential debate with legendary journalist and Anchor Walter Cronkite, which she called, “a career dream!” A graduate of the Valley’s Hispanic Leadership Institute, Anaya was selected by the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as one of their “40 Hispanic Leaders under 40.” She is proud of her heritage and focuses much of her energy on her community. “The Hispanic community is multi-layered and can’t and shouldn’t be painted with one stroke,” says Anaya. Along with her demanding career and community outreach, this mother of two is an avid marathoner who strives to be an example of “passion and compassion” for her children. “I’ve faced many challenges in my life and each time I’ve discovered inner strength I didn’t know I had…we women are so used to carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders we rarely give ourselves credit for being the super women we are,” says Anaya. “It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being perfectly me.”

Fit For the Bold and Courageous Meet Shannon Wallace. She’s betting (and hoping) you’ll love her handbags. “When you’ve been unemployed for over a year, and the market appears to be relentlessly unchanging, you get creative. My name is Shannon Wallace and I got creative.” For the last 20 years, Wallace has been in the marketing and government relations industry. After losing her job, and “wallowing for a brief month, or three,” she decided to recharge her creative intellect and tap into uncharted territory. As a result, she created and launched her own handbag line—”creating feminine designs fit for the bold and courageous and the meek and mild.” Wallace lived at the sewing machine for several months designing, sewing and embellishing bags she wanted to be seen carrying. “As my adventure continues to evolve, I feel compelled to mention to my sister readers—extend yourself into places you would not normally find comfortable. I love fashion, always wanted to work in it, but never knew where to begin. Just start. Start telling everyone what ‘you’ want to do.”

One “Lucky Lady” Meet Ruth Davis. After a full year of job searching, enduring many closed doors and much rejection; she realized a career path in corporate America was not meant to be. Davis was facing an economy that was bottoming out, her kids were grown and moving out and her degree as a corporate trainer was getting her nowhere. Davis never liked the fit of a strapless bra, constantly tugging on them and would ultimately avoid wearing her favorite blouses because the “bra was miserable” and painful. “Shall we say ‘the girls’ just needed more support,” jokes Davis. Because she didn’t consider herself a “blingy-bra” kind of gal, and found the clear plastic straps to be unsightly, she decided “a look of jewelry” would make the perfect alternative, and the perfect accessory—a bra strap that was meant to be seen. “I decided to make my first set of beaded bra straps that would attach to my bra and give me the support I needed.” After much trial and error, she felt confident in wearing her straps out among friends. To her surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive and she immediately began taking orders from her girlfriends. “The rest is history! My bra strap sales are at an all time high and I am happily exhausted with my new enterprise.” March of 2010 marked Davis’ one year anniversary of being in business for herself selling strap designs to women who share her zeal for “shoulder jewelry.”

Italia Rocks Couture Meet Natalia Acosta. She began gaining popularity and attention thanks to Scottsdale Fashion Week 2008 and 2009. She created the gown Miss Arizona Brittany Bell wore the night she won the competition in 2010. Originally from Mexico, Acosta moved to Phoenix 10 years ago to earn a degree in fashion design and merchandising. As she creates, designs and hand-sews one-of-a-kind evening gowns, she hopes her fashions will someday grace Hollywood’s red carpet or be carried in department stores. Acosta’s love for glamour and fashion grew toward evening wear, allowing her the most creative freedom. “A beautiful dress can make any woman feel like a queen.” She says, “It changes a person…you feel beautiful.” Earlier this year, Acosta took her designs to a local boutique called Boom Boom La Rue and has been creating fashions there ever since. “I have my own little room there for now…someday I will have my own studio,” she says, adding “I know the field is competitive, so is everything in life.” Today, Acosta has 80 original gowns and 200 sketches ready to be custom created and tailored to size. She is looking forward to developing as a designer. “I have too many ideas to keep them in my head,” says Acosta. “I just bought two new sketch books to start designing handbags and high heels.” 20

The Shoe Multiplier Meet Shannon Hinkson. Three years ago, while visiting her husband’s family in Denver for Christmas, her sister-in-law arrived wearing a fabulous pair of boots. They were adorned with fur and buckles. As Hinkson admired her sister-in-law’s style, her idea for Bella Legs came to her and was, “literally born in a split second.” Hinkson says she had a vision of an entire collection running through her mind, like a movie. “I saw the idea initially as slipcovers for boots,” says Hinkson. “They would change the look of one pair of boots into several amazing pairs. It would save money, keep women’s shoe collections up to date, season by season, and provide classic to more interesting fun designs and styles.” There would be no limit. She would work on patterns after the kids went to bed, and often well into the morning. “I had never made or followed a pattern…threading my new sewing machine was a challenge.” After months of trial and error—“my husband lost a lot of shirts to the process”— Hinkson finally perfected a pattern she was proud of—a pattern she could wear in public. Her first test was in the busiest place she could think of—Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. After being stopped three times by inquiring and admiring women, Hinkson knew it was time to seek a manufacturer. “I read every manufacturing and textile guide I could find. I joined an apparel design group, took a multitude of seminars and exhausted every learning resource I managed to get my hands on,” says Hinkson. However, it wouldn’t prepare her for the cut-throat world of fashion as she felt manufacturers weren’t giving her the time of day. But, before discouragement set in, she met an L.A. manufacturer who was willing to take a chance on her and her Bella Legs. The “shoe multipliers” were tested in the Hollywood market and received positive and overwhelming feedback. They’ve been featured in Women’s Wear Daily, Trends magazine and TV Guide. Bella Legs are locally sold in Elan Fashion Boutique at the Mix Shops and 20-Lounge in The Seville. They are also available in Colorado, Montana, Idaho and the cities of Hollywood, Portland, Park City and Dallas.

Baby Bling Meet Naima Guy. The allure of a home-based business had always intrigued her, especially as she struggled to balance parenthood with her career priorities. Then, as a friend struggled to find a unique and affordable baby gift, the idea for Baby B Jeweled hit her. “I’d always had an affinity for keepsake gifts, plus I love modern fashion and anything that sparkles,” says Guy. She immediately began embellishing traditional heirlooms, such as baby’s first shoes and sterling silver rattles, with bling and her own signature “twist—” perfect for celebrating the arrival of fashionistas in training. Suddenly, Guy found herself filling orders for friends, family and colleagues, and with that, Baby B Jeweled was born. Guy has been adding a touch of sparkle to baby’s world since 2007 and has never looked back. “I have felt beyond blessed to translate my talents and interests into a thriving business,” says Guy, adding that it’s been an endeavor she’s enjoyed while affording her flexibility to balance her role as entrepreneur, mother and wife. The line, which is gaining in popularity, features fully encrusted rattles, birthstone shades, custom engraving options, newborn shoes with jeweled bottoms and sassy bandanas. This collection of baby bling is now being picked up by upscale children’s boutiques locally and beyond, along with popular on-line “e-tailers.” But don’t forget, you saw it here first. “I can honestly say, I am inspired by my family every day. Whether it’s a new design, product line or marketing idea, having a strong support system has been the key to my success.”

The Top Knot It’s couture, it’s high-fashion and it’s trendy—so it must be pretty hot. You be the judge. It’s the hottest hair styles coming out of recent fashion runway shows like the Venexiana and Woman’s Mafia Fall shows. Even celebrities such as Victoria Beckham are donning this new up-do called the Top Knot or Chignon. And, watch out for the “Empire Chignon,” a new twist on the classic Chignon. It’s architectural hair at its finest—taking on whole new heights—literally. pW

...Blending Your Styles by Amy La Sala

Whether you’re setting out to build the home of your dreams, remodeling an existing space or opting for a complete interior overhaul, design experts say, it is possible to find a harmonious balance between his and her styles. We sought-out some fun, creative ideas that will not only satisfy “her” desire for a beautiful home but also appeal to “his” wants for hightechnology and functionality. It can be done. Compromise and research seem to be the key. First, a great way to begin is by flipping through architecture and interior design magazines and books to determine your style as a couple. Are you looking for a modern, contemporary home or something more rich and traditional? Publications are excellent resources to find inspiration and offer unique, simple ideas. They can help you learn to blend feminine and masculine colors and textures, illustrate ways to merge your styles through mixing and matching home furnishings and provide innovative ways to use space. As you begin the process, you may want to start by discussing what rooms you’ll be spending the most time in. The high traffic or common areas usually include the family room and kitchen. Identifying these spaces and determining a design direction early on will help bring your style to life. One of the easiest techniques to transform a room is with color and texture. When looking to blend his and her styles, color can have a strong influence and is one of the most economical ways you can change the energy of a room. For example, if you are looking to make a space feel larger with soft, feminine colors on the walls, incorporate rich textured furniture as a compromise.

According to Kerri Foreman, senior interior designer of Scottsdale-based Vallone Design, many couples choose to blend their favorite colors and textures as a way of reflecting their own personalities. “Leather is a favorite among men while women tend to look for softer and lighter fabrics, says Foreman. “Finding a balance for both while creating a cohesive design can be a challenge but a qualified professional can make all the difference. For instance, pairing a dark leather sofa with softer textural elements, such as an area rug and cashmere throw, creates an impactful visual contrast, and helps soften the overall look and feel. Ultimately, the colors and textures you choose should be an expression of both your tastes and should create a home environment that functions with your lifestyle. As you continue to develop a style and color palette for your home, depending on the scale of the project, you may choose to do-it-yourself or decide to enlist the help of an expert. Designers, builders and architects can offer an entirely new perspective and guide you through the process, sharing their vast resources and expertise. Having access to these resources will not only give you a fresh, professional design, but can be cost effective. Another great method for blending your styles is through furniture and home accessories. Mixing furniture of various design and size can help unify a room. While men typically gravitate toward larger, more comfortable pieces, women are usually interested in what makes sense for the space and how it brings the room together. A happy medium can be reached. Oftentimes, striking that balance is not only about synchronizing the color palette, but also about offsetting oversized pieces with smaller items like end tables, lamps and accessories. Rooms with high ceilings should feature large artwork on the walls to draw the eye up, but not everything should be so grand. Experiment, incorporate items of various scale, play with height and try different colors and textures. Additionally, think about function when placing furniture. Sofas and chairs should face focal points of the room such as fireplaces or windows offering awe-inspiring views—it’s not

all about design; consider purpose as well. Nancy Pfeiffer, senior project manager for Kitchell Custom Homes says, “We often hear from women about how it’s tough to reach cabinets and shelves in their current kitchens and living rooms. These are things we consider when building a custom home or remodeling an existing space.” Installing kitchen cabinetry and countertops at varying heights is one technique to adding more accessibility. In the bathroom, you may choose to have separate mirrors or vanities adjusted to suit your heights specifically and the same goes for office space or closets where custom-built desks and shelving are built around you so it’s always a perfect fit. Just as merging his and her styles may prove challenging, many couples have chosen to have their own defined spaces to express their individual tastes. His and her separate home offices, “man caves” and craft rooms are just a few examples of how couples can carve out their own niches within their home. Vallone Design has completed the interior for numerous homes with unique features such as,

underground shooting ranges, sport bars, batting cages, massage and aromatherapy rooms, cigar rooms and specialty garages to showcase private car collections. These spaces allow men and women to showcase their personality and styles. With more people embracing their home environment rather than looking outside of the home for entertainment, this is certainly a trend that will continue to evolve. “These male-centric spaces are not limited to just high-tech electronics and oversized furniture,” says Foreman. “We’ve decorated rooms designed for cigar smoking with special ventilation systems, recreation rooms with pool tables and arcade games, full-scale shooting ranges with gun collection displays and unique

garages for car collectors.” Because women typically take the design lead throughout the main house, a “man cave” gives him an opportunity to have a unique space that is all his own. “One of our clients is a huge sports fan and requested two dozen televisions in his new home,” says Pfeiffer. “The only request his wife made, is that she didn’t want to see them.” The solution—Pfeiffer satisfied both parties by building hidden rooms and slide-away walls. She even housed TVs behind mirrors and artwork. In the end, he was happy, and she was ecstatic that the TVs did not interfere with the home’s overall décor. Both experts agree, your home should tell a story and be an equal expression of you as a couple. It will certainly involve some compromise, but should be a fun, creative experience you can enjoy together. Your house truly becomes a home once you add your own personal touches. pW Amy La Sala is a public relations professional at Crosby/Wright and enjoys freelance writing.

LOVIN’ Lake-Side Looks...Made Easy

With wild flowers blooming, clear skies and the warmth of the Arizona sun tempting us outdoors, hitting the lakes becomes a no-brainer; a natural endeavor; it’s just something you do; an Arizona rite of passage. As our scorching summer approaches…bright swim suits, breezy sundresses and casual khaki’s will take over. From the airy and light to the muted and bright…spring into the season with fun hats and flip-flops while donning some very laid back hues. Do denim if you dare. You’ll look boat chic and relaxed while enjoying some clean, summer, all-American fun. Live it up, because “summer lovin’ happens so fast.” pW Photography by MATTHEW DUTILE www.matthewdutile.com

The Power of a Pet How Gabriel’s Angels are Healing Children by Leslie Sonnenklar

FYI Pets Helping Kids Fundraiser Event Gabriel’s Angels Annual Breakfast Where: The Phoenician 6000 E. Camelback Rd. Scottsdale, Ariz. When: Friday, May 7, 2010 Time: 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a. m. Admission: Free (you must reserve a seat) Contact: 602.266.0875 Learn about the organization and hear first-hand stories regarding the impact a dog can have on the life of a child.

A smile, learned compassion and a warm touch is what the therapy dogs of Gabriel’s Angels count on when they go to work each day. Gabriel’s Angels is a non-profit organization in the Valley whose mission is to deliver healing pet therapy to abused, neglected and at-risk children, nurturing their ability to love and trust, thereby freeing them from the cycle of violence. Five children die each day in the United States from child abuse and neglect. These children don’t know what it’s like to trust, be compassionate or treat others with kindness. It is the work of Gabriel’s Angels therapy dogs that teach these children these important skills. “Traumatized children will trust an animal much easier than they will trust a human,” says Pam Gaber, chief executive officer and founder of Gabriel’s Angels. “They will look at me and may not trust me because I represent those who have hurt them, but they will look at Gabriel and form a special connection. The dogs love the kids unconditionally, so the children respond by giving back that love.”

In 2000, Pam Gaber founded Gabriel’s Angels when she discovered her little Weimaraner puppy, Gabriel, had a significant impact on the children at the Crisis Nursery in Phoenix. As Gabriel visited with the children one day, Gaber saw their little eyes light up. She saw their tough exterior turn friendly and their anger turn into kindness. At that moment Gaber knew her dog, and many others, could permanently change the lives of these hurting children. “I saw children’s behavior change when I took Gabriel, dressed as Rudolph, to a Crisis Nursery Christmas party,” says Gaber. “When I left that day, I knew my dog had made a difference in their lives in such a short time, and I had to continue to help these kids. So, I left my job in the corporate world and Gabriel’s Angels was born.” The therapy dogs of Gabriel’s Angels have a job. They go to work, just like you and me. Each week they put on their vest, hop in the car with their owner and they change the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk children all over the Valley and southern Arizona.

Through the love of a therapy dog, the children discern tolerance, gain confidence and learn how to properly treat other living beings. These are core behaviors adults have failed to teach them. “Once children learn empathy, compassion and trust they are less likely to repeat that cycle of violence of which they were once victims. Our pet therapy program is built on this foundation,” says Gaber. During a visit, the children interact with the therapy dog by listening to their heart, feeding them treats and brushing their teeth. The kids learn to be gentle rather than violent. And, the children seem to respond. They quickly begin to show signs of happiness; they’ll begin to feel a sense of responsibility and what it’s like to feel needed and loved by somebody. This positive reaction to the unconditional love of a pet has proven to be so powerful and effective that this program has been adopted by more than 100 facilities in Phoenix and southern Arizona. Gabriel’s Angels has more than 150 volunteer pet therapy teams, which visit at-risk

children in crisis nurseries, domestic violence and homeless shelters, group homes and after school programs. The kids range in age from infant to 18 years old. “Once people see the power their dogs have on healing children‌ they know they’re making a tremendous difference.â€? The organization welcomes new pet therapy teams, volunteers and the financial support of the community—the need to help children is rising and more agencies are coming forward requesting the love of these dogs. Volunteer information sessions are held each month at the Gabriel’s Angels offices. The organization strongly believes the bond between a therapy dog and a child is strong enough to break the cycle of violence. A Life Well Lived Leaving Behind a Piece of Arizona History by Terence Murnin

Although the old quote “behind every man stands an even greater woman,” has been uttered countless times to describe the role and life of Valley woman Gene Johnson, the saying, as of late, has taken on new meaning.

64

phoenixWoman.com

If you don’t already know, Johnson is the matriarch of Bill Johnson’s Big Apple Restaurants. Her trademark recipes, so sought-after and delicious, have seemed to become a piece of Arizona history—signature country-style meals that have been enjoyed by thousands of residents for many generations. Johnson passed away this year—on Jan. 5th; just weeks shy of her 90th birthday. “My mom was the driving force behind the restaurants, but she never really got the credit she deserved,” says Johnny Johnson. “Dad was the front man; the showman—wearing the cowboy garb and guns and performing his radio show in the restaurant, while mom was the quiet one behind the scenes, creating the barbeque sauces and hiring the cooks, which really made the restaurants sing.” Johnson's barbecue sauce and homemade deep-dish apple pie have become quite famous over the years; back in the day, attracting cowboys from the stockyards and anyone else in town for some good ole’ fashion food and entertainment. It was 54 years ago that Johnson moved to Phoenix with her husband Bill, and decided to open a restaurant on Van Buren. Gene was the cook and Bill provided the entertainment hoping to create an experience that would both nourish and captivate. Who knew it would be so successful.

Soon, Bill was broadcasting a rebel radio show out of a makeshift broadcast studio in the restaurant. Countless celebrity musicians, actors, cowboys and politicians including Tex Ritter, Gene Autrey, Roy Rogers, Wayne Newton and Rex Allen would show up unannounced, eat some of Gene’s great food and chat with Bill while Arizona listened. “For a time, it was like walking into ‘The Tonight Show’ every day at my grandfather’s place,” says CEO Sherry Cameron. Johnny also remembers his dad being somewhat stern. “One day he had fired me from the night shift after I said a 50-cent-an-hour job wasn’t that important to me.” As always, Gene intervened and the next day Johnny was back on the job, with an even better position, on the day shift. As it usually goes with legends, Bill passed away much too early in 1968. But, Gene was determined to carry on the family-business. She continued to run the kitchen and Johnny took over the radio show.

above: Gene and Bill Johnson inside their family-owned restaurant. below: Gene Johnson wears red, and is surrounded by family, in one of her last portraits. Today, with five valley locations, three generations of Johnson’s have made sure the family-business has not only survived, but thrived. In 2006, the restaurant celebrated 50 years of serving the Valley, all the while adhering to Bill and Gene’s favorite saying—“a stranger to us is just a friend we haven’t met.” Phoenix will truly miss one of its legendary friends. pW Terence Murnin is a local public relations director and enjoys freelance writing. Prep Your Piggies… It’s Sandal Time!

Are you ready for open-toed shoes, flip flops and sandals this season? Have you prepped your piggies? What if you’re suffering, like many, with unpleasant nail fungus, the most common disease of the nail…what do you do then? Before you decide that this could never happen to you, consider this: because of the increased use of public gyms, showers, pools and nail salons for our precious pedicures, you could be leaving yourself vulnerable to a rampant, unprovoked attack of fungus, with no warning. But, finally there is good news—and, for the first time, a possible cure. For this, we went straight to the experts at Arizona Institute of Footcare Physicians who have been using a new laser treatment to eradicate this pesky fungus once and for all. -pW

phoenixWoman.com

Shedding New Light on Toenail Fungus by Dr. Kerry Zang, D.A.B.P.S, F.A.C.F.S. I have found something new to help my patients. For years, I have been looking for a safe, effective treatment for fungus toenails. It is not a life threatening or debilitating problem, but it does affect my patient’s lives. While a nail infection most likely will not cause any other serious health problems, it can be painful and make it difficult to wear certain shoes. It is unsightly. While many women are able to hide this condition with nail polish, they still know that the fungus is there and it bothers them. People also become concerned that they will infect their family members, which is very possible. The fungus can spread from person to person, and can be contracted by going barefoot in a public shower or pool. Towels and nail clippers can also spread the infection; so unfortunately, women are vulnerable when getting a pedicure at a salon. Many patients believe the infection lies underneath the nail plate, but it usually involves all layers of the nail. In the beginning, the fungus is usually limited to one toenail and presents an unattractive, yellowish appearance. As time goes on, the nail thickens and may become deformed. The nail plate may separate from the toe with debris forming under the nail. And, it can spread to other toes, as well. A fungus makes people feel uncomfortable about their overall hygiene. They try scrubbing their feet, clipping the nails really short and applying over-the-counter remedies to try to make it go away—nothing seems to work. In the past, toenail fungus has been a very difficult condition for even physicians to treat. The nails on our toes not only provide protection from injury but provide an effective barrier against infection. However, once a fungus becomes entrenched, the same barrier that was effective in protecting against infection, now works to protect the fungus. This makes it difficult, if not close to impossible, to treat because it is so difficult to reach. Past treatments included antifungal creams, lotions and nail polishes. These topical medications are slow to work and not very effective. The clinical data for the only FDA approved topical medication reports a complete cure rate, of at best, 8.5 percent. Not a very impressive statistic. Oral medication is available, but it can put your liver at risk and does not have a high level of success either. There can be serious side effects from these pills, and blood tests are necessary to monitor your liver function while you are taking the prescription. The clinical data for this medication reports that only 38 percent of the patients in their first toenail study demonstrated a mycological cure plus a clinical cure. I personally don’t feel that the potential benefit of this treatment protocol outweighs its potential risks.

FYI

Toe Tips Feet produce about a cup of sweat a day, and shoes absorb it. Sweaty shoes are the perfect environment to grow fungus and bacteria, leading to odor, athlete’s foot and fungus toenails. Dr. Zang recommends using a germicidal ultraviolet light to disinfect and destroy the micro-organisms that live in shoes. Sanitizing your shoes is essential to help guard against re-infection. It also prolongs the life of your shoes.

Treatment Options Treatment: OTC nail polishes and creams Effectiveness: 4 to 8 month treatment can have 9% to 36% efficacy Treatment: Prescription oral medications Effectiveness: 12 week treatment can cause minor to serious side effects Treatment: Laser treatments Effectiveness: In-office, painless procedure has an 88% to 98% efficacy (not covered by insurance and can cost $750 or more) Treatment: Surgical removal of nail Effectiveness: Immediate results, performed by a podiatrist as a last resort for extreme cases or those with severe pain Sources: www.toenailfungustreatment.com; www.toenail-fungus.org

For the past year, I have been treating patients with a new laser protocol that is getting national attention as a non-invasive, painless treatment, which poses virtually no risk to the patient. This therapy operates under the principle of photochemistry by enhancing the natural processes of the immune system and impacting the structural integrity of the fungal strain. It is believed that this therapy provides a mechanism to effectively treat clinical mycosis (infection) without any adverse effects. It is a very exciting breakthrough for treating fungus toenails. The laser technology kills the fungus, while leaving the nail and surrounding skin unharmed. In fact, after the treatment, the area shows absolutely no sign of change. The change occurs slowly over time. While you cannot see results over night, your nails will continually grow—the healthy nail appears at the cuticle as the nail grows. Results are often seen in approximately 16 weeks; however, it takes about a year for the nail to d completely replace itself. This is the first treatment that gives us the potential to eliminate a condition that has been bothering patients since the beginning of time. It is a personal decision whether to treat fungus nails or not, but I encourage patients to have it done. No one wants to feel like they have to hide their feet. I recently saw one of the first patients to receive this new laser therapy last year. She told me she was happy to wear open-toed shoes again and that she was no longer ashamed of her feet. It is nice to offer hope to patients who have been discouraged with the results of past treatments. pW

The“Weight Loss Cure” by Catherine Holland

Every time you turn around, there seems to be a new must-try diet on the market, promising stellar results and, more often than not, failing to deliver. These fads often involve radical surgeries, cutting out entire food groups or taking potentially unsafe drugs. But have you heard of hCG? People are calling it the “miracle diet”and the “weight loss cure.” We had to investigate, ask questions and learn more about how it works, if it’s safe and if it’s worth attempting. In short, there is something to this. hCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. It’s a protein hormone that is produced in pregnancy, made by the developing embryo and later by part of the placenta, to explain it simply. Basically, the hormone has a number of important and complicated functions with the goal of maintaining pregnancy.

Q:

What would happen if hCG was present in a woman who wasn’t pregnant? What would happen if hCG was present in a man? These are questions one doctor from Italy most likely asked in an attempt to solve the problem of obesity. According to his manuscript called “Pounds and Inches,” Dr. A.T.W. Simeons of Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome, was looking for a “theoretical method based on clinical observation” to cure what he called “abnormal fat—” to cure a “metabolic disorder of mystery.” Dr. Simeons considers over-eating the result of obesity, not the cause, and after 40 years of trials with patients and investigating the thyroid gland, the pituitary and the adrenals, he landed on the hypothalamus. The manuscript explains three

68

kinds of fat, the injustice to the obese and considers the hypothalamus, in many cases, to be a “fat bank—” again, to explain it simply. According to the manuscript, which we found on the internet, hCG had long been used to treat children with under-developed genitals. Dr. Simeons noticed his young patients’ appetites and body compositions changing while on hCG. His clinical trials showed the “abnormal fat was on the move” making it available for the body to use as energy. This is how he discovered and refined the hCG diet, later testing it on patients with varying degrees of obesity and weight problems. To his surprise, and the surprise of many in the medical community, hCG, in low doses, and in conjunction with a doctor supervised very low calorie diet (VLCD), seemed to work as a weight loss regimen on women and men—and in many cases, it worked faster on men. Today, there are two primary versions of the hCG diet—one involves shots, the other is a liquid you place under your tongue. The shots or the liquid drops are combined with a prescribed VLCD of 500 calories. Some say anybody can lose weight on a 500 calorie diet, but the theory behind hCG, is that the hormone causes the body to release the abnormal, deep fat to be burned as energy. Many patients report not feeling hungry on such low calories, those who do feel hungry can receive help with appetite suppressants. People who have undergone the 28-day treatment have reported a loss of one to two pounds per day. Yes, per day. Not only did they

lose weight quickly, but many of them have kept the weight off long-term, giving credence to Dr. Simeons’ theory of the release of deep, abnormal fat deposits. Here locally, many doctors have adopted the hCG diet and are offering different weight loss programs for their patients based on the same fundamentals Dr. Simeons created. The team at Vital Solutions MD believes so strongly in the hCG diet, they actually offer a guarantee—a guarantee that you will lose weight if you follow their program. “Our program sets people up to be successful,” explains Jeff Dana owner of Vital Solutions. “We design a program for the individual based on a scan and on their specific needs.” The scan Dana is referring to measures bone mass, lean tissue and fatty tissue down to the gram so they’ll know exactly what your body is made of, what your lean-to-fat ratio is and what your weight-loss goal should be. It’s a key component to the Vital Solutions program, helping you maintain lean muscle mass while losing weight. “It is a lifestyle change,” Dana says. “We encourage exercise. With muscle, either you use it or you lose it.” Even though the hCG diet plan deters exercise initially, because of the VLCD, Dana’s team, with the help of the body scan, can determine just how much exercise you should do. They also provide patients with access to a trainer, a nutritionist and support groups. “I’m a living testament that it works,” says

â€œâ€ŚI feel wonderful, and even after three children, this is the healthiest I have ever been in my life.â€? — Christina Jordan Dana. He followed the program and lost 101 pounds. His wife joined him and lost 38 pounds. With the exception of the personal trainer, everybody at Vital Solutions has gone through the program with success, and no ill side-effects. Now, if you can’t bear the idea of shots, Red Mountain Med Spa offers a unique hCG program called Releana. It’s a liquid hCG that’s taken sublingually and it’s the only medical spa in the Valley offering this liquid form. “The Releana diet was the answer I had been looking for after years of frustrating weight loss attempts and hours of rigorous exercising routines,â€? says Christine Jordan, who now actually works at Red Mountain. “I was on this program for six months and lost over 70 pounds.â€? Jordan dropped nearly 10 sizes and is now a size six. “Our primary focus is to help you lose weight, reverse the effects of aging and create a healthier you,â€? explains Dr. Suzanne Bentz, the medical director of Red Mountain Med Spa and Family Medicine. “Our programs are personalized,

because everyone is unique. Patients are guided through a customized weight loss program with the expertise of a caring physician and staff. Bentz was actually one of the first Arizona physicians to bring the hCG diet to the Valley. So far, she has helped more than 1,000 people lose weight, some of which have lost more than 100 pounds. “Studies have shown, the average person loses 20 pounds the first month, one pound per day, and has no side effects, Bentz says. Doctors at both Vital Solutions and Red Mountain say those who denounce hCG programs simply don’t understand the science. They do warn, however, to be weary of internet fakes claiming to have hCG. Imitation products can be harmful and ineffective. They also warn against attempting an hCG program without doctor supervision. “I feel strong and healthy, my energy level is high, my husband loves the way I look and best of all it was the easiest, fastest and most successful weight loss program I have ever tried, Jordan says.

While hCG has proven to be effective in many people, it may not be for everybody. “We might need to clear up an issue first such as pre-diabetes, Dana says. “If you have a high insulin level, your body chemically will not burn fat. Dana also says, “if your cortisol levels are too high, your body will not burn fat. Once a person’s body is metabolically ready for the diet, he believes anybody can do it, with the right amount of work and guidance. Jordan says she would recommend the diet and is grateful for having gone through the process. “Even my own family and friends are shocked by the change and some didn’t recognize the new, slimmer me. I feel wonderful, and even after three children, this is the healthiest I have ever been in my life. pW Catherine Holland is a freelance writer who resides in Phoenix.

Not only is it centrally located—situated on Mission Bay with water, sandy beaches and marina views from your room, but the hotel is surrounded by lush vegetation flowing ponds and bridges feeling more like a tropical island than a hotel. It’s 81 steps to the top, and believe me, they will run up and down it all day if you let them. Word is, the tower was built for a movie production, and the resort never removed it—so there it stays, beckoning your welcome. The Paradise Point is not new to the city, but just recently unveiled its $20 million renovations featuring an exotic South Pacific motif throughout the grounds. It is at times whimsical and fun, but maintains a true island feel. GASLAMP QUARTER

The Gaslamp Quarter is one of the coolest and funkiest places in San Diego. Oozing with history dating back to the 1800s and stretching over eight blocks, from Broadway to Harbor Drive, the Gaslamp is truly the historic heart beat of the city. Once home to tattoo parlors, seedy bars, pawn shops and adult entertainment, the Gaslamp today features 100 of the city’s best restaurants, 40 nightclubs, retail shops and specialty, one-of-a-kind boutiques with unique personalities and unexpected treasures. Revitalization took place in the 70s, with city-wide support including business and property owners who shared the same goal—rehabilitating and preserving the district without losing the historic aesthetic. In 1980, the Gaslamp Quarter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1989, the Gaslamp Archway, with its vibrant neon, incandescent and fluorescent lights, has been welcoming its visitors for a nostalgic taste of the past while successfully delivering a freshly transformed market place of premier shopping, dining and entertainment for all ages. With countless boutiques, art galleries and shops to peruse, and restaurants ranging from luxurious to kid-friendly, to do-it-yourself barbeque, the Gaslamp has established itself as an elite urban destination—the playground for the hip and eclectic.

It is pure fun for the whole family; Sea World is a beautiful park where you can encounter creatures from the sea you may otherwise never have a chance to witness. Much more than a zoo, the exhibits of sea life here are presented in a creative and interactive way. Sea World, of course, is known for Shamu, its under-water shark experience and the hilarious sea lion and otter shows, but did you know they now have a dog, cat and pig show called Pets Rule? The show, which features pets doing funny and amazing tricks, has become a huge hit with the kids, and the park gets to adopt and rescue animals from San Diego shelters—pets that were clearly meant for the spotlight. Also new to the park, and scheduled to open in May 2010, is a dolphin show called Blue Horizons. It’s said to have Las Vegas elements with a rockin’ sound system, stunt and acrobatic performers and high-tech water features. The new stadium will hold 700 additional seats and will feature bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and exotic birds.

In June 2010, Legoland will open its first water park. The new addition will feature 50 new rides and interactive attractions geared toward children ages 2 to 12. As it stands, the park allows kids to get “wet-and-wild” with watery jungle gyms, playgrounds and rides—bring a swimsuit and towel for your little one—with the onset of this new water park, they’ll need it even more. The new water park, which will require an additional admission fee, will feature a six-person raft slide, tube and body slides, a lazy river, toddler areas and a center where kids can build their own soft Lego rafts. Natalie James reads a StoryChimes story on her iPod.

“Once Upon A Time” Goes High-Tech Virtual Fairytales for Children… Thanks Dad! by Shannon Wallace

As children, we’ve heard our moms and dads start off our favorite fairytale bedtime stories with “once upon a time…” And now, we probably do the same with our little ones—if time allows. Since much of our lives these days seem to be taken up with going here and there; we can only hope, as parents, that during all the carting around to daycare and playdates that we are providing our children with the things they’ll need for successful formative years. Well, how about a new tool for children to encourage family hour and reading, which is sure to take “once upon a time” to whole new level—to a cutting-edge, educational and techylevel. The tool is called StoryChimes. It’s a virtual collection of children’s storybooks designed to provide kids, age’s three to 11, with a 3-D, interactive and tactile experience.

Each story is brought to life in a whole new way and can provide a visual child with experiences traditional books don’t offer. Colorful illustrations seem to come to life as kids can read along with character voices, sound effects and music. At the end of each page, StoryChimes will even instruct you to “turn” the page with the sound of a chime and with a swipe of a finger across the screen. Local Dad-creators, Justin James and Nick Bonomo put aside their personal interests to spend all their free time creating this high-tech, kid-friendly gadget. Finally off the ground, their invention uses an application that combines technology with childhood tradition in the best form of contemporary, ultra-portable storybooks for modern families’ on-the-go or at home. The inspiration for their idea, in part, came from their own experiences with their children.

WHAT WAS THE MOTIVE FOR GOING TOWARD DOWNLOADABLE, ON-LINE BOOK APPLICATIONS? “We are fathers of two and one respectively, and we both hold demanding jobs. Like most parents, we wanted to give something to our kids that could teach them important skills, like reading, but in a fun way and on-the-move,” says Bonomo.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU? “It was important for us to spark kids’ vivid imaginations,” says James. “There’s nothing like reading to encourage that thinking. The illustrations, narrations, sound effects and music create vivid pictures that let their imaginations run wild. We also wanted to create a tremendous value at a price for any wallet. That way, parents can carry an entire library right in the palm of their hand.”

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE STORIES YOU CURRENTLY OFFER? “We wanted to make something our kids could be proud of and would want to continually use. We chose our stories with good morals and a broad reach like: ‘Little Red Riding Hood,’ ‘The Red Shoes,’ ‘The Queen Bee’ and ‘Cinderella.’ Each StoryChimes application is given great care and attention,” says Bonomo.

TECHNOLOGY HAD TO PLAY A LARGE PART IN ORDER TO EXECUTE THE IDEA. WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET IN FRONT OF YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE? “Luckily, Apple has the best platform, for young entrepreneurs like us, in the form of the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Combined with the proliferation of the Application Store, it is the perfect ecosystem to get out in front of millions of busy parents,” says James. Each StoryChimes story is offered at $0.99 and there are nearly a dozen stories now available with new releases planned throughout 2010.

WHAT IS THE BEST FEATURE OF STORYCHIMES? “We’ve worked closely with our programmer to deliver a tactile application. We wanted to replicate the “feel” of turning pages, even though kids wouldn’t have physical books. This feature is easily one of the best things kids love about StoryChimes,” says Bonomo. pW Shannon Wallace is a local and national marketing consultant and spokesperson. INFOLINK:

A Civil Rights Leader Eleanor Dickey Ragsdale 1926-1998 by Heidi J. Osselaer, Ph.D.

In 1953, Phoenix was a segregated city. When Eleanor Ragsdale, a light-skinned African American real estate agent, went looking for a home for her family, she found one she liked in north Phoenix near Encanto Park. The neighborhood had restrictive real estate covenants, prohibiting the sale of property to “those having perceptible strains of Mexican, Spanish, Asiatic, Negro or Indian blood.” A white friend purchased the house. Then, Eleanor and her husband Lincoln bought it while it was still in escrow. After they moved in, the Ragsdale’s received threatening phone calls and found racial epithets painted on their home. Despite the harassment from neighbors, they

chose to remain in the neighborhood and raised their four children in that home. Eleanor Dickey grew up in a middle class black family just outside of Philadelphia. In 1947, she received her bachelor’s degree in education at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Her first teaching position was in Phoenix, where she taught first grade in the racially segregated Dunbar Elementary School. She joined the Greater Phoenix Council for Civic Unity, working to desegregate the school system. Family members introduced her to Lincoln Ragsdale, a former Tuskegee Airman who built a mortuary business in Phoenix after World War II. The couple married in 1949. Together, Eleanor and Lincoln became a powerful force for civil rights in Phoenix.

As a licensed real estate agent, Eleanor was acutely aware of how difficult it was for blacks to purchase property in Phoenix. She helped desegregate the area around the state capitol by selling homes to black clients. In 1962, she called for the introduction of legislation that would outlaw segregation in public accommodations. Working through numerous civil rights groups, church organizations and women’s clubs, she met with key lawmakers and marched in demonstrations, including picketing at the state capitol, where she recalled she was “spat upon and called ugly names.” Success came in 1964 when the Phoenix City Council passed civil rights legislation, as did the federal government. The Arizona State Legislature followed suit one year later. When Martin Luther King, Jr. visited Phoenix in 1964, she entertained him in her home and later worked to establish the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday in Arizona. Although she is largely remembered for her civil rights work, she also endeavored to combat gender discrimination through her numerous associations with women’s organizations. pW Heidi J. Osselaer, Ph.D., is on the Scholars’ Committee for the Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail. She is also a Faculty Associate at the main campus of Arizona State University in Tempe. She is the author of “Winning Their Place: Arizona Women in Politics, 1883-1950.” INFOLINK: FYI

Women such as Eleanor Ragsdale have made major contributions to Arizona’s development, but their stories are missing from our history. The Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail links women’s history to historic sites throughout the state, educating the public on women’s contributions and leadership while promoting women’s history. Through collaboration with the ASU Institute for Humanities Research, this Centennial Legacy project will also include driving and walking trails, primary school curriculum, website, tourist maps and publications.
